It took me about an hour and a half to walk about four miles today. I had a couple of hours to get from 72nd street down to 4th street, so I figured I might as well go on foot to use the time. I didn't get a lot of thinking done, which I put down to having to keep dodging and weaving through crowds - that kind of thing's easier when there's nobody in my way, on foot or any other method of transportation. Which is on me for sticking to a busy street at a busy time of day than walking a few blocks over and trying on that.

There's also my head's not here or there, and I need to find some space to drift.

This time the blood sugar stayed over 400 most of the day and crashed out just before water aerobics. That went much the same except I think I hurt my shoulder this time (she has two exercises I've never done in any water aerobics and it's easy to do them wrong)

Today was my writing zoom meet up. went well. I've pretty much pushed the new novel almost to the 10K mark (I'm like 230 words short). So I'm 1/8 of the way there in just a couple weeks. Yay.

I also owe [personal profile] seta_suzume an apology. There was a name change in Easy's sister's name but when I ran the find a word thing it didn't pick up on it. Side eyes word.

It's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is 18 a song that makes you smile Share your faves too.

This last Friday afternoon, I held my hand out and a ladybug landed on me. All I'd seen was a tiny bit of movement coming my way, and in holding my hand out, I gave a ladybug a place to sit a moment. Yesterday, I got sunburned from walking around under early cherry blossoms on an absolutely gorgeous late March day. I'm still sore and a little itchy, and I'll be wearing high-necked clothes for a while. There was boba tea, and three different bakeries, and pizza and tacos and a lot of fandom talk with the friend I was staying with - making the other laugh was something we both tried to do a fair amount of, in a game where both sides come out ahead of where they started.

The train got me there early, and got me back a little late. I gave my friend excuse to take me to some of her favorite places, and reason to visit a few more. The both of us stepped away from our regular lives for a while in a mutually beneficial relationship, and now the prospect of the real world looms for tomorrow morning. There was a lot of freedom to be found in basically cutting myself off from the internet - the extent to what I could do on a practical level was check email. My phone wasn't connected to a wifi network, so I couldn't get anything but plain text messages, and it was a surprise to see how many non-text messages I'd missed when I got back to my place.

Bread Furst, Rose Ave, Un Je Ne Sais Quoi, Comet Ping Pong, 801, Spot of Tea, various Smithsonian cafeterias, my friend's kitchen. Various Smithsonian museums, the tidal basin and its various memorials, the circle at Dupont Circle, Metro stations, my friend's apartment. Her roommate and her two cats. A short walk along an urban trail that took us to the Ann and Donald Brown House, which I knew looked impressive enough to be worth talking about. A lot of time with nothing to do and no reason to worry about that. Some TV watched, some movies, not much writing but a good deal of reading and talking. She'll be leaving Washington DC soon, possibly to another coast, possibly somewhere still reasonably close by. I'm glad I got to visit her before she left, when I could still do it by train and be home well before bedtime when it was over.

It's late somehow. I spent the day on the diabetes rollercoaster starting out at 350 and staying there until suddenly I was 80 at 5 pm. So I'm tired. I'm groggy. I'm not going to have much energy for writing thoughts today but can we talk about call backs.

Do you do them? Do you like them? I have not used many and I like them well enough. This is front of mind for two reasons. At my book club thing, one of the ladies was talking about what she hated about the indie book she had was it was forced call backs done badly. She said she liked call backs but this one went on and on. And without spoilers, The Amazing Digital Circus had a massive and wonderful call back. Everyone was praising the foreshadowing of that.

But I'm also thinking...was it? What if they just simply rewatching/reread earlier stuff and thought hey, you know what... ha. (that would be how I'd end up doing it)

By wordcount, The Goes Wrong Show is now my fifth most written fandom of all time, even discounting the fifty-plus Goes Wrong fills I wrote for the Three-Sentence Ficathon. This is an insane development; I started writing for this fandom two and a half months ago. Everything else in the top five is something I've been into for a decade or more.

I wonder what's made me fall so hard into writing for this fandom; slapstick stage plays are not my usual fandom fare! My best guess is that it's a combination of factors:

- There's enough Goes Wrong canon for me to get to know and care about the characters, but, at the same time, there is not enough Goes Wrong canon to satisfy me, so I'm uncontrollably driven to create more.

- In particular, there's very little Goes Wrong canon that shows the characters offstage! There's enough to get me interested in what happens offstage, and a couple of fascinatingly insane canonical details about the characters' personal lives (I am never going to be over the fact that Robert has canonically slept with both Chris and Dennis's mothers), but their offstage lives are left as a largely blank canvas that I can't resist painting on. There's a very obvious stretch of unexplored territory, and that sort of thing is always going to invite fanworks.

- Although this is a small fandom and my fics for it don't generally get a large readership, it's got enough life and passion in it to feel like I'm sharing with an enthusiastic small community, rather than dropping my work into a void. I've received a lot of really lovely comments, which have been very encouraging ♥

- I find Robert and Chris's voices very easy to get into. They're both middle-class, English and inclined towards slightly pretentious and/or old-fashioned phrasing, and, let's be honest, so am I.

- I'm very attracted to Robert Grove (as played by Henry Lewis), which is a fun novelty; it's pretty rare for me to find anyone seriously attractive. As a consequence, my writing about him has a refreshingly genuine horniness that I hadn't realised was lacking in a lot of my shipfic! It's very easy for me to write about Chris being attracted to Robert, and to believe wholeheartedly in that attraction, however unhappy Chris might be about it.

- Robert Grove is just a very fun character to write. I think a large part of it is as simple as that. He's loud, he's imposing, he's larger-than-life, he blithely causes problems for everyone, and everything he says or does is ridiculous. Plus he's straightforward in a way that proves extremely handy when writing shipfic; I've often had to struggle with characters who refuse to acknowledge their own feelings or dance endlessly around each other, so it's refreshing to write a character who will decide 'we should have sex' and then make that opinion very clear.

- It's been a long time since I last got heavily into a comedy fandom, and I'd forgotten how much fun it is to write comedy!

I'm so glad I was introduced to this stupid show. This is the best time I've had in a fandom in years.

It's definitely spring today

I wanted so much to go for a hike but I couldn't because a) no one I usually hike with could b) my bad knee is being stupid.

So instead I was going to go shopping in Chillicothe but also I wanted to write. So I stopped at my usual coffee house for a Marshmallow Chick latte (meh, not very strong flavors ah well) got a lot written. Got to Chillicothe, still wanted to write so I went to that new coffee shop in the place where I was going for years. It was bad last time when they were just first starting but they did pick it up and it was much better this time.

I got some crosstrainers! I needed new sneakers in the worst way and I I hate shopping for shoes especially with my weird feet. I am very happy.

Got stuff at Aldi's and I must face the fact my fridge is nothing but cheese, salami and prosciutto so what shall I do about this? Eat a lot of cheese.

Got a few things at TJ Maxx including a few things for Rocket.

Also I went to Ollie's and did something I've never done before. I dropped something and broke it. That was embarrassing. It was cute solar power light (which I ended up not buying any because that would be all I thought about).

No science this Saturday other than this entry for Women's history. I didn't learn this theory in school but I HAVE taught it since I came to my university. I had no idea it was a woman's theory that had been ignored and belittled for years and now it's science canon (at least for now since science does evolve) But DNA has proven her right about mitochondria being bacterial. Anyhow meet Lynn Margulis

Watching something on Hallmark Mystery that is just plain awful. I was excited for something new Nelly Knows Mystery. The acting is bad, the plot ludicrous, good lord. The detective barely knows what he's doing and a uniformed officer seems to be in command (unless she's the sheriff? I have no idea because it's too dumb to pay attention to

Bus reroutes, long detours, long lines, slow crowds, and other such inconveniences are made easier with a friend there with you for commiserations and conversations.

The Smithsonian’s African American museum deserves two days to really take in, but we managed a decent overview with about six hours, minus 30 for lunch. The building used every minute of all the years it took to design and construct.

And what a first day of spring it's been. It's 75 degrees. I went to my first book club meeting at the new bookstore (run by one of my former students) where I got them interested in my book, These Haunted Hills and it was a fun book club where we only had to read 'a green book' and talk about it. Next month is an assigned book. To be honest I don't really go to book groups because I rarely like the genres we read. We'll see how this goes. I did find out a major mystery writer I like will be there in May. Yay.

And I really really need to read the specs on fan merch I buy. I always don't do that and I always get surprised often in a bad way (like my itty bitty husk/angel things) However this time the surprise is in a good way. I got the Valentine's day cards for Hazbin because I liked the art. I thought I was getting a few art cards. I got a damn box of stationary. Wow.

And holy hell episode 8 of The Amazing Digital Circus dropped tonight. It was amazing. It's up there in second place for me. I'll have to watch it again and I'll have more thoughts about it later.

Today also saw the passing of Chuck Norris and Nicholas Brendan who played Xander on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In watching Buffy recently I realize I dislike Xander even more now than I did back then. That said, I am sorry that Nicholas passed so relatively young.

And I got some writing done plus I have a new open call for you this weekend, another one with big name anchors and pro pay about were creatures. I was spitballing ideas with evil little dog tonight. We'll see what happens.

I went back to Prodigal Son this week for my story

I have a question for you

[personal profile] cornerofmadness
Since today was boring and no one would care about it (me included) so let's have another writing question.

Do you have something about your characters that you love and think about it, even though you know it might not be in the story? Tell us all about it. I want to hear it. Original characters or your favorite fandom characters.

Here's mine for my new characters Ezio and Remo (Remo might have a name change). They dance together. A lot of my characters dance. I might mention they're dancing but I don't do a lot of writing about it because it's not all that interesting to read. But it also has me thinking about what kind of music would these people have.

Yes it's a 1920s era tech level but that doesn't mean necessarily that the music is the same. that said I love the fast step, jive, boogie woogie styles and if by some miracle this novel ends up a movie...well then.

Anyhow I stumbled over this British version of Dancing With the Stars (kinda sorta, at least they allow gay partners) and thought these two would be exactly how Ezio and Remo learn to dance with each other (in book two, ha!) These are three of my favorites.

My favorite. I'm beginning to think I'm a reborn flapper because damn men in suspenders dancing does something for me

And while not my favorite tango I liked this one because Ezio is genderfluid and just as likely to be in a dress as a suit. Also Layton does a fucking backflip in heels and I am jealous

In theory I'm doing the [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge but I have done nothing until now. Finally got some going. I posted it to AO3 but It's also under here )

In DC, safe and well-fed on ramen, my friend and I waited for the bus to her place. I looked around in the full night of a city I’ve rarely been to, in a neighborhood I’d never visited, and couldn’t shake an odd feeling.

Then it hit me, and I had to say, “Holy shit.” I’d needed a specific spot for something in a novel, and it’d looked familiar because she’d taken me to a spot just around the corner.

It wasn’t quite deja vu. More likes dream where you know the building already, even though you’ve never been.

I was going to but I started to feel very nauseated and cold. Came home sat down to play a game, woke up an hour later. I'm feeling a little better but not great. Not going was the right call.

Got the midterm grades in. Can't wait for the crying tomorrow.

I looked up the Ohioana book festival because I know it's up and coming but there was a library staff change and the festival was canceled. I'm bummed and angry. I didn't make it last year for reasons and now I don't know if it'll ever be back.

What I Just Finished Reading:

The Snow Child - depressing

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison. Would have been better without the misogyny and sexual abuse (but would it be Ellison without the misogyny?)

On commentary again. I see you. I appreciate you. Mid term grades are due tomorrow so I am overwhelmed. And annoyed. And I will be busier and busier as we go. At least 5 of the 7 students who missed the midterm before break showed up today and took their exam (we had like three sports teams out that week) one had a good excuse for coming tomorrow and the other (who happens to be the one who's been cheating) didn't bother to let me know what they're doing so someone is gonna be surprised tomorrow when grades go in

I did want to say a lot of you did respond to my question about those scenes that won't leave you alone. Most do what I do as well, write them out and even if you don't use them, it's out of your head. While I do this I don't do it enough and I think that is because I'm afraid if I do, the whole thing will go quiet. I've had that happen. That's a whole different set of problems.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals The Real Cause Of The 'Buffy' Reboot Cancellation—And Fans Are Livid

I wasn't sure I was thrilled about the reboot but it grew on me the more I learned about it but can we as fans say how fucking tired we are of some exec making foolish choices based on their arrogance and feelings. Bragging how much you hated Buffy and didn't bother with it originally is not a good reason to make this choice.

Three seconds of research would show that 25 years later still has fans churning out a few dozen stories/art/articles practically daily. You're talking a rabid fan base ready for th is, not to mention a whole new generation of fans to woo. So Hulu is losing a ton of profit because of one man's ego. And this is not for the first time. We've seen this time and again, especially with these 25 y.o. male execs who seem to not understand their audiences at all.

The last time I was this infuriated was with Prodigal Son which Fox touted as it's number one show and then 1 episode from the end, cancels it taking everyone including the cast by surprise.

Time I would've spent writing this evening was spent on cooking risotto for lunch and filling out tax forms as best I could. I opened the document and poked at it a bit to feel something and say I'd at least poked at it, and that helped me relax from the taxes enough I can think about doing something else with the night. Not much, but something else.
