What I'm Writing (1/29/19)

I feel like I blinked and half of January disappeared! It's been a very exciting time for me, writingwise.

I posted my Bangelus story. I put it on my secondary AO3 account, mostly because I know I have some followers on my main who would probably not be into it, and I don't want my friends to feel any obligation to read it. (This was my main concern about posting it during the IWRY Marathon and why I ultimately chickened out.)

I also got randomly inspired to write a little Punisher fic. I never thought I would want to write in another fandom, especially one I'm not even really *in* yet (though I'm working on that now!). I've only seen a tiny bit of The Punisher, but I fell in love with Frank and Karen through Tumblr, which is so incredibly weird. Anyway, writing for a more popular pairing is WILD.

I was feeling a little uninspired about my Buffy/Angel butcher shop AU, so I posted the first couple of scenes to Tumblr to see if there was interest. I got some good feedback, so now I'm feeling excited to keep writing it.

I'm really behind on fic reading (mostly because of non-fic reading and watching Daredevil Season 1), but I'm hoping to get back to my Marked for Later list soon.

In the Works:
Writing: Butcher shop AU
Prepping: Two B/A ficlets set in Season 3, which I will post in the next couple of weeks.
Dreaming about: More Kastle fic! But I'm going to finish watching the shows first, lol.

Snowflake Challenge: Day 15

Day 15 – Talk about why you participated in Snowflake & / or what you got out of it.

I decided to do the Snowflake Challenge this year mostly because I haven't made that many posts here yet. I'm really glad I did it! It made me think; it gave me a chance to rec things I love; and I loved getting so many recs from others!

I'm planning to continue using DW as my home for writing accountability and fic recs this year. We'll see how it goes! I pledged for [community profile] getyourwordsout and I'm eyeing [community profile] wipbigbang now too!

Snowflake Challenge: Day 13 and Day 14

Day 13: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year.

I've been thinking about this, and I've decided my main goal is just to publish my stuff! I am kind of tired of having these debates with myself about whether or not to post things, so as much as I can, my mantra is going to be: If I take the trouble to finish it, I'll post it. (Maybe not always to my main AO3 account, but somewhere.)

I think that's a big enough goal for me. I would like to write a longer story (say, 40K), but I don't want to put too much pressure on the ideas that I have. I'm just going to write them as long as they are. I think I'll eventually get there through experience.

Day 14: In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom.

I hope that fandom thrives because it's such a lovely thing and I enjoy my little piece of it so much. I don't know what's next, but I plan to be there.

What I'm Writing (1/12/19) + Snowflake Challenge: Day 12

After giving myself a pass on writing for a bit, I'm back to it. I already talked about the Dawn POV ficlet that I wrote this week and didn't post. I also wrote the first couple of scenes of the B/A butcher shop AU.

I finished up the Vamp!Buffy/Angel piece, which ended up 2,001 words, because 2K has totally become my comfort zone. I think my beta is the only one who's going to get to read that one, at least for now. :D

Today's Snowflake Challenge is to create a challenge, and I think I'm going to be really boring and challenge myself to finish the first chapter of the butcher shop AU next week. If I had to describe it, I'd say it's kind of a mashup of the episodes Angel and City Of, with a side helping of Jenny Calendar.

In the Works:
Writing: Butcher shop AU; possibly my Buffy/Faith one-shot now that the holidays are over.
Outlining: NOT the butcher shop AU, on purpose, to see if pantsing serves me better.
Dreaming about: The fifth in my Season 3 B/A vignettes series. A post-Earshot one seems the most likely contender. The first two are here and I have two more written to post. But I want to have a nice round five (I know five is not round at all, but you know what I mean — fandom likes fives).

Snowflake Challenge: Day 11

Day 11: In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

I don't really have a creative process. I haven't done enough of anything to know what works best for me. I can say that most of the things I've written that I've liked were written in the Notes app on my phone while I was probably supposed to be doing something else. I guess if I had to come up with something, my process is: get a flash of dialogue in my head, frantically tap it out, then come up with whatever will link me from one flash to another.

I struggle with motivation when it comes to longer stories. I've only written one (that most people would still consider short) and I needed a Watcher to get that done. (My usual beta read every chapter but only gave a bit of positive feedback to keep me going through the first draft.)

I don't know about "tricks" but I definitely find myself needing to "blow off steam" from one story with another story or with something like a vid.

The planning/pantsing question is one I'm actively figuring out. I've outlined for any story I've written that's more than 8K. But I had the experience recently where I outlined a story I was really excited about and then I was like, "OK, that story's done. NEXT!" So I'm still planning to go back a try to write it but I'm also working on a story that I haven't outlined and just have basic ideas for. So we'll see which I like better, assuming I get either of them done!

Snowflake Challenge: Day 10

Day 10: Create a fanwork.

I wrote 900 words of a post-Forever story from Dawn's POV. I don't think the final result worked, but there's good stuff in there that I think I can use for the future, so I'm going to not post it and hope to turn it into something more later.

Snowflake Challenge: Day 9

Day 9: Commit an Act of Kindness

.

Hmm, this one is a little tricky for me in the context of fandom. I beta-read a fandom friend's original fiction last night, but I don't really consider that an act of kindness because I really wanted to read it.

Tonight I am going to start working on a fanvid to post for a friend's birthday. I guess that counts? But again, I'm excited to do it.

I also reached out to my first fandom friend, who unfortunately has been pulled away by life stuff, and let her know I'm still thinking about her. I also sent her this gorgeous Angel gifset because I think she'll really like it.

Snowflake Challenge: Day 8

Day 8: In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

For all its faults as a fandom space, one thing that Tumblr has done for me is get me over my reluctance to self-rec. So! I'm actually going to do two lists, because the three I most want to rec are all Buffy/Angel and I don't get the sense that there are too many people here who are into that pairing. So I'll do a non-B/A list too, just for fun.

B/A Self-Recs

Psyche: This is a loose retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche that I wrote for the 2018 IWRY Marathon. It's set after both series (as well as After the Fall, but you don't have to have read it to get this — there are only a few references). This story is the one I'm the most insecure about, since it was my first attempt at a longer story (it's only 22K but that's long for me!), but I'd really love B/A fans to give it a try. (Rated teen & up)

Another Minute: This is a 2K one-shot that follows Buffy after the events of I Will Remember You, written for the 2017 IWRY Marathon. The response to this story was so amazing for me, since I really wasn't expecting much. It's my most popular in terms of hits and bookmarks. (Rated teen & up)

It's Only: I loved making this vid and I think it expresses a lot of why I love the Buffy/Angel pairing. It's not like what the popular vidders can do, but I still think it turned out pretty well. (Also, the experience of this gorgeous Odesza song is much better with headphones on, just FYI.)

Non-B/A Self-Recs

Blood Made Beautiful: This is a 2K one-shot set post-Chosen when Dawn is in college. Faith comes to town. They're not going to be friends. The Faith/Dawn pairing appeals to me so much and I loved writing this, particularly the little flashback to the Amends snow. I work the Amends snow into so many of my stories. (Rated teen & up)

Precipitation: Another 2K one-shot (those are definitely my bread-and-butter), also using the Amends snow, but this time with no Dawn. Instead, it's Faith and Cordelia, two incredibly fun characters to write and to pair up. (Rated teen & up)

Portions for Foxes: This has been my least popular vid, and my skills have improved since doing this, but I still think this Rilo Kiley song is so perfect for Buffy and Faith.

These all ended up as Faith femslash. Totally didn't plan that!

Snowflake Challenge: Day 7

Day 7: Try something new.

I need to actually write today, since it's been forever, so I'm just going to embarrass the hell out of myself and post this thing I made awhile ago. It was definitely an example of me trying something new. I was psyching myself up to finish up a Buffy/Angel story and so I made a teaser trailer for it. It's laughably bad, especially since I don't have the editing skills needed for something like this. But I did find it motivating to give myself the blockbuster treatment. This fic is a total wish-fulfillment romance genre-y thing, where Buffy (with Pike) shows up at a Wolfram & Hart party post-Chosen.

*blushes* *hides face*

Update (1/19/19): YouTube finally realized I used *gasp* 26 seconds of Taylor Swift and blocked this, so I deleted it. Those of you who saw it can consider yourselves lucky! :D

Snowflake Challenge: Day 5 and Day 6

Day 5 - Promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

[community profile] buffyversetop5 (or on LiveJournal): An excellent source for Buffyverse recs! I gobbled these up when I first started reading Buffyverse fic, and I contributed some of my own recs in the most recent round.

iwillrememberyoumarathon Tumblr: I help run this blog with my friend Mrs Gordo, so this is self-serving, but I still love it a whole bunch. It's been pretty quiet since the 2018 IWRY Marathon ended, but we've got plans for the future, and a fantastic set of recs for Buffy/Angel fans. This year will be the 20th anniversary of I Will Remember You first airing, so it should be special!

[community profile] su_herald (or LiveJournal or Tumblr): Yet another self-serving rec! I'm one of the editors (Sundays) and I still can't believe that this newsletter continues to come out on a near-daily basis! I've discovered so many great things though the Sunnydale Herald and I'm sure you will too.

Day 6 – Create a fannish wish list.

Hmm, this one is hard. I guess...

1) More new Buffy/Angel fic. We've got a bit of a feast-or-famine thing in our corner of the fandom, with November and then the rest of the year. It would be nice to get a little more sprinkled throughout, though I feel bad even saying this because it's amazing there's any at all, considering how old the fandom is and how late I came to it.

2) More — or recs for — Faith/Dawn, Faith/Cordelia and Faith/Willow fics. Yes, I ship Faith with like every female character. :D

3) Gunn fic recs. I haven't read much Gunn-centric fic and I'd like more. Pairings with Wesley or Fred are good. I particularly love him with Anne Steele. But I'm open to pretty much anything.

What I'm Reading (1/4/19)

I totally forgot to write anything this week. (Translation: I got slightly obsessed with a new vid and blew it off. Whoops.)

I haven't read all that much fic, either. I did read two Buffy novels over the holidays. One, Sins of the Father by Christopher Golden, was pretty decent. I've been writing some Pike myself in recent months, so it was fun to see him show up in the officially licensed fic. The other, Child of the Hunt by Golden and Nancy Holder, was not as good. The second half especially. But the first half had some great Buffy/Angel moments, so it was well worth the price of admission for me.

I've got a lot of stories in my Marked for Later list on AO3, thanks to the Snowflake Challenge recs and the Which Willow ficathon.

But I still have some amazing stories to pass along to you!

  • 'Tis the season by Melacka: My Buffy Femslash Secret Santa gift was amazing! I was a little bit nervous about requesting Buffy/Faith, because I thought I might get an Angel basher, but everything worked out perfectly. I loved Melacka's debut contribution to the IWRY Marathon this year, and her Buffy/Faith was just as sweet and spicy. Sigh. (rated teen & up)
  • the measure of the little while that i've been gone away by fiveainley_ohmy: I stumbled across this story while scrolling through the B/A AO3 feed on Tumblr and boy am I glad I did. Persephone!Buffy and Hades!Angel?!? How did I live my life for so long without it, that's what I want to know! (rated teen & up)
  • broke my heart now i'm wasting my time on you by heterocosmica: I need more Faith/Willow in my life. This is beautiful and bittersweet. (rated G)
  • Woman of Steel, Man of Kleenex by frogfarm: It's Xander and the Buffybot post-The Gift and it's perfect. And what a knockout title! (rated teen & up)
  • Five After Two by frogfarm: Five Faith drabbles that are painful and hopeful and lovely. (rated mature)

Snowflake Challenge: Day 3 and Day 4

I got behind yesterday, so this post is doing double duty.

Day 3: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much.

I recently wrote about my favorite Buffy episode on Tumblr, so here's an edited version of that:

Why I love I Only Have Eyes for You )

Day 4: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

I
was really excited to see escritoireazul mentioned in the Herald yesterday (rec'ing beer_good's fabulous Olly Olly Oxen Free), since I'm a fan. Commented and subscribed!

Snowflake Challenge: Day 2

Day 2: Rec at least three fanworks that you didn't create.

I really love recs! So...

Three Fics

As Time Goes By: "In its own, unexpected ways, the Hyperion Hotel remains the last help for the hopeless in the vast wasteland once known as Los Angeles."

If I had to choose just one Buffyverse story, it would be this Casablanca/AtS mashup. It's just. so. good. Half the fun is finding out which AtS characters Yahtzee placed into which Casablanca roles, so I won't do any spoiling. But some fun little tidbits include: 1) The story follows the Hays Code, 2) It's told entirely in black-and-white (no references to color), and 3) I'm given to understand that it made a whole lotta shippers really mad.

The Quality of Mercy: OK, yes, I'm including two Yahtzee stories. Not sorry. Yahtzee is just my favorite. This is a post-Epiphany story in which Riley shows up in LA, and it's so much more satisfying as a follow-up to both the Buffy/Riley relationship (though Buffy does not appear) and Epiphany than what either show actually did, in my opinion.

All Ways: I just re-read this Buffy/Angel/Spike story recently, and it blew me away again. Kita's use of language is so beautiful that it makes me ache.

Three Metas

Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs "Buffy The Vampire Slayer": I rec'd this beer_good meta on Tumblr recently, but I'll do it again! This essay almost singlehandedly made me appreciate Season 7.

Prophecy Girl: Mark Field was pretty much the reason I got sucked into the Buffyverse fandom and I've remained a huge fan of his. His essay on Prophecy Girl is one of my favorites.

I Will Remember You: Angel and the Oracles - What's Going On?: A great breakdown of IWRY by a2zmom, with a lot of good discussion in the comments.

Three Visual Works

Closer: This vid by lucystonersix is sooo fun! I love the song, and it makes me ship everyone! At least for the length of time they're on screen. :D

Plath-inspired B/A gifset: This just hit me in the gut. I love it so much.

The Scientist vid: This B/A vid by MrsESsmich is so cleverly done. A classic! (Warning for lots of flashes, though.)

Snowflake Challenge: Day 1

Day 1:  In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane.

My happy place is between the pages of a book, or meandering amid the lines of fanfic. Pretty standard, really. But I have found that not reading — and specifically, not reading fiction — is associated with a decline in my mental health. It really works to get me away from the deeply rutted pathways of anxiety.

The other thing that I have found to be an especially happy place for me since coming to fandom is vidding. It's so absorbing. There's so much detail work with hitting the beats and hunting down the right clips. I like how it requires focus and creativity but is not as soul-chipping as writing can feel sometimes. Also, my standards for myself are much lower than with writing. :D

Happy New Year!

What I'm Writing (12/27/18)

This has been the week of the ficlet for me. I wrote an Angel Investigations Christmas scene as a backup gift for a Buffy-Boards Secret Santa participant whose Santa went MIA.

Let Nothing You Dismay )

And I posted a little post-Amends Buffy/Angel scene on Tumblr.

Comfort, If Not Joy )

I decided to do a series of little Season 3 B/A ficlets, since it's such a fertile ground for them. So far I've done Buffy's POV just before the kiss in Revelations and Angel's POV during the Bronze scene in Bad Girls. I also have a little post-The Prom scene I did several months ago. I'll probably post them all to Tumblr separately and then put them on AO3 once I have five to make a little set. I need one more, so if you have suggestions, let me know! They work great as little writing/character exercises.

In the Works:
Writing: Ficlets!
Outlining: The next scene in my B/A soulmate AU is a classroom scene. Since, in the Buffyverse, those always have thematic relevance, I want to make sure I choose well.
Dreaming about: The butcher shop AU! I rewatched So I Married an Axe Murderer this week, since the female lead is a butcher. Research! LOL. There weren't as many butcher shop scenes as I thought, but it was still fun. And dark romantic comedy is the same mood I'm going for. I think I need to play around and write a few little scenes to see how it goes before outlining in earnest.

What I'm Reading (12/21/18)

Stories I read and liked this week included:
  • Eyghon, another installment of the Our Time series by rippergiles (Giles/Ethan, mature)
  • We Three Ghosts Of Accident Are, a very merry holiday tale by beer_good_foamy (Faith/Willow, PG13)
  • Opened Hearts, a sweet and spicy Spicy Advent story by Cornerofmadness (Connor/Dawn, explicit)
  • Another three-sentence fic by thenewbuzwuzz — this one in the form of William verse! (William/Drusilla, worksafe)
  • A Gift From the Heart, another sweet Buffy Femslash Secret Santa story by baumanhp (Buffy/Faith, not rated but PG-ish)
These little fandom commentaries are funny:

What I'm Writing (12/20/18)

I made a little bit of progress on my Buffy/Faith story (tentatively called Orbit) during my weekend of traveling, but only about 500 words. I've got about 1,200 drafted for what will probably be a 2,000 word one-shot. I think I'm going to set it aside until after Christmas, since it's a bit of a downer and I'll be in a better headspace for it then.

I also drafted the first two scenes of the Buffy/Angel soulmate AU, and I plan to keep working on that through the holidays. I'm about halfway through the first chapter. For now, I'm calling this one Marked. I'm already thinking it's going to be shorter than I initially envisioned. I just can't seem to write/plot long yet.

In the Works:
Writing: Orbit, Marked
Outlining: Nothing new
Dreaming about: I've actually stayed pretty focused on the soulmate AU this week, though I did a tiny bit more writing/thinking about the Vamp!Buffy/Angel story. (I don't like Vamp!Buffy stories! I don't like Buffy/Angelus! Why am I writing these things! LOL)

Happy Tillow Holidays!

Well, there's been some delay with revealing the Secret Santa gifts over on Buffy-Boards, but I already made my vid public on YouTube when they were supposed to go up. So here it is! Again, nothing fancy with audio or coloring, but I had fun making it. And this song always makes me think of them.
